Description

First off, some news to other musicians: to celebrate their 25h Anniversary, East West has set an unusual precedent for sample library developers: they have re-released their older libraries in PLAY format. While frankly, I'm not fond of how limited PLAY is, the fact that they're willing to accomodate fans of their earlier sounds is unheard of beyond the hardware synthesizer names like Korg and Moog.

As for this piece, which is in the style of Gary Numan's Jagged album (particularly influenced by "Haunted"), all of the drums are courtesy of BT's Breakz from the Nu Skool and Percussive Adventures 1, neither of which I could've legally acquired otherwise due to their being discontinued until now.

Additional gear used:

Korg M1 VST
Spectrasonics Distorted Reality 2
Impact Soundworks Shreddage II
Waldorf PPG Wave 3.V
Omnisphere

The guitar line, while made from scratch, was also based on a construction kit sample from East West's Adrenaline.

Decent work.

In terms of atmosphere the beginning of this composition gets the job done, such as the echo effects as well as other sound effects that plays at the very beginning which helps giving it a futuristic tone, accompanied with a piano that helps making it sound more dark and foreboding which is a nice touch. I also like that during the bombastic guitar line that plays during the loud sections, the electronic percussion jumps about with different sounds and sense of structure and rhythm giving it a sort of mixture of something that belongs in sci-fi but also making it feel retro with something that sounds like chiptune for the most part. It´s experimentation like that I really like.

In many ways I say that in terms of style and tone it gets the job done, but there´s a catch.

Unfortunately, there´s only so much a composition, depending on how well it is structured, can deliver before it starts to get repetitive and tiresome. Where this composition for the most part succeeds in terms of style and overall tone, it suffers however in terms of actual structure behind the composition, and after listening for about two minutes it started to feel like I´m listening to the same piece of music over and over with little to no variation in-between, and I´m afraid five minutes really doesn´t help in that regard. Rather than having the same notes playing repeatedly, it really would´ve helped if more work was put into the actual middle section of the composition, like say key-change or something similar in that fashion.

The highlight of this composition, however, is near the ending where the echo-like sound that plays over the guitar line which plays the bombastic chords accompanied with the electronic percussion. Glimpses of fighting spaceships inside the tunnels of a dark glistering emerald planet comes to mind when that moment happened. It´s small touches like that I really love and made me desire for more rather than having it play at the end, which really is unfortunate.

Overall, it´s not bad but it´s not quite there yet. There are many parts I feel are handled well enough like atmosphere and sense of style which is a good first impression. Behind it though with the overall structure of the actual composition is where I felt it could´ve gone better.
